History

The Knight Center was founded by Professor Rosental Alves, with a $2 million grant from the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation. In 2007, the Knight Foundation pledged an additional $1.6 million over five years to allow the Knight Center to refocus its work as a digital media center for Latin American and Caribbean journalism and to expand its efforts to serve as an incubator for new journalism organizations.

The Knight Center has helped journalists to create the Brazilian Association for Investigative Journalism (Abraji), Mexico’s Center for Journalism and Public Ethics (CEPET), the Argentine Journalism Forum, the Peruvian Provincial Journalists Network, the Paraguayan Journalism Forum (FOPEP), and the Newsroom Council (CdR) of Colombia.

We conduct all our training activities in partnership with independent journalist organizations that are either forming with our assistance, or already in existence but seeking to grow. Every Knight Center collaboration is designed to help these organizations to develop the track record, strategies, and technical assistance needed to become long-term, self-sustaining actors in their respective countries.

Activities

Our four main activities are:

• To help journalists create and/or strengthen organizations to elevate journalism standards and defend press freedom in the hemisphere.
• To organize seminars and workshops in person and on the Web to increase the skills of reporters, editors, and photojournalists.
• To maintain a trilingual Web site (in English, Portuguese, and Spanish) that monitors daily journalism news in the Americas and offers useful resources for journalists.
• To organize the Austin Forum on Journalism in the Americas—an annual conference and a permanent network of organizations dedicated to journalism training and press freedom in Latin America and the Caribbean.
