President Rafael Correa proposed new regulations to control the “excesses” of media outlets that he believes practice “freedom of extortion” instead of freedom of expression, EFE and The Associated Press report.
At his inauguration ceremony for a new four-year term as president, Correa said that though he respects independent media, governments need to “lose their fear” of the press.
According to El Tiempo, the leader – who considers the media as part of the opposition to his government – said that the biggest adversary during his first term was a press that played a clear political role, yet lacked democratic legitimacy. “We have to take action. We are the ones that win elections, not the managers of the lucrative businesses that call themselves the media,” Correa added, quoted by the AFP.
