Uruguay gives one laptop per student; a nod to citizen reporting?
A new generation of citizen journalists could emerge in Uruguay, where, according to the BBC, the government says it has given laptops to 362,000 students and 18,000 teachers in state primary schools.
Ahead of Sunday’s general elections, Uruguay’s participation in the One Laptop Per Child program founded by Internet pioneer Nicholas Negroponte is being promoted as an achievement of President Tabaré Vázquez, BBC says.
Uruguay is well ahead of its neighbors in increasing Internet connectivity and reducing the digital divide, Vázquez writes in Americas Quarterly. See other articles about the laptop program.
