María de los Ángeles González Hernández, a columnist for the newspaper Política, reported that she and her family received death threats from union leaders in Xalapa, Veracruz in retaliation for unflattering coverage, the Center for Journalism and Public Ethics (CEPET) reports.
González asked for protection from police and the state governor after receiving several e-mails saying that her life was in danger and that she should stop reporting on union issues. One e-mail warned her to not cause trouble because "not only you will suffer, your family too," El Sol de Córdoba reports.
Violence against journalists in Mexico has led several organizations to criticize the government for strengthening impunity and not protecting freedom of expression, El Universal reports. In their quarterly report (PDF file), Article19 and the National Center for Social Communication (CENCOS) count three killings and 59 attacks against journalists and media outlets from July to September.
