The international blogging community Global Voices has launched Threatened Voices, a site that tracks the suppression of online expression. The site centralizes information from a range of free speech advocacy networks with a map and timeline of threats, arrests, and violence due to online speech.
Most cases are from China and the Middle East, but there are several examples from the Americas including Cuba, United States, Venezuela, Guatemala, and Canada.
The site was built with several freely available digital resources:
*Google Maps (see this post for Google Map advice for journalists).
*Google map tools like Time Map and MapIconMaker.
*Yahoo! Pipes to track information about threatened bloggers.
For more information, see the project website and Global Voices’ announcement.
