Venezuela’s top court backs shutdown of five radio stations
The Supreme Court rejected a challenge by the owner of Caracas-based radio station CNB 102.3, which sought to annul the state telecom regulator’s August decision to close the station, AFP reports.
The court ruled that the regulator's actions did not violate the right to free expression, as the station argued. It also affirmed the government’s right to revoke broadcast licenses from other stations, El Universal adds.
CNB 102.3’s parent company was one of the hardest hit by the procedures, with five of its 10 stations forced off the air, The Associated Press reports. The company's executives insist the closures are illegal.
