Some 500 editors and publishers are gathered in Buenos Aires for the Inter American Press Association's Annual Assembly, taking place Nov. 6–10.
Discussions will focus on Argentina's new media law, a proposed media law in Ecuador, and recent developments in Venezuela. Also to be examined are recent cases of censorship and interference with the media's work in Colombia, Bolivia, El Salvador, Uruguay and Brazil.
“All these diatribes against the press are basically schemes that the governments invent to control the media," IAPA Executive Director Julio Muñoz told La Nación.
IAPA will also devote special attention to the alarming number of journalists killed in the last year, EFE adds.
The growing tension among Argentine authorities and private media serve as a backdrop to the meeting and raise expectations for the gathering, La Nación says in a separate story.
The governments of Venezuela and Argentina have organized a “counter-meeting," also in Buenos Aires, scheduled for Monday, Nov. 9. Expected to participate are lawmakers, employees, union members and scholars, EFE says. According to Clarín, the "First International Meeting for Media and Democracy in Latin America," held in parallel with the IAPA event, seeks to address "the media monopolies and the uniformization of public opinion."

IAPA Assembly in Buenos Aires to address laws that interfere wit
