Radio stations air phony interviews of Lula imposter

Portuguese-language radio stations were fooled by a satirist posing as Brazil's President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva. Speaking with state radio in Angola, the imposter claimed to be speaking live from a shantytown in Rio de Janeiro that was embroiled in a drug war, Britain’s Guardian reports. That interview was broadcast for several days before the hoax was discovered, BBC says.

A segment aired in East Timor, and the trickster also spoke with stations in Mozambique and Cape Verde, the Guardian and Telegraph say. Australia’s Special Broadcasting Service, which specializes in foreign-language programs, discovered the hoax when a producer became suspicious of the sound quality, the Telegraph explains.

The Brazilian government launched an investigation into a São Paulo radio comedian who is believed to have staged the hoax.
