The island’s blogging community has gained more attention recently due to its online protest last month and the difficulties faced by blogger Yoani Sánchez, who was prohibited from traveling to receive an award, and last week reported being detained and beaten by Cuban security agents. Amid such retribution by the government, the blogosphere has taken on a “harsher face,” the Miami Herald’s Juan Tamayo reports.
“Carefully, but with daring determination, some Cubans whose blogs once focused largely on the frustrations of daily life are moving toward sharp-edged commentaries and activities that some fear will eventually lead to a crackdown by the communist government,” he says.
Havana has long tried to restrict Cubans’ access to the Internet, but people on the island have found ways to stay ahead of the security agents, whose knowledge of technology may be lagging, one blogger tells Tamayo.
