Every country should analyze its own record on freedom of expression, and the Inter American Press Association (IAPA) should avoid an ideological focus in its analysis of media in the hemisphere, the U.N.'s rapporteur for freedom of expression, Frank La Rue, told Ecuador's El Comercio.
La Rue, on a visit to Quito, also disagreed with IAPA's criticism of Argentina's new media law, which he called "the most advanced" in Latin America, the Associated Press adds. He also pointed to the creation of many laws in the region that have generated a reaction from media monopoly groups. He said the laws are "shaking up" an "unjust structure" and that freedom of expression must be equitable for all sectors.
While IAPA criticized the creation of a “legal architecture” against the media in several countries, La Rue said the continent is lacking judicial reform, EFE adds. He offered his office's technical assistance in drafting a new communication law for Ecuador
