Bolivian broadcast of alleged rape causes uproar

A public defender and several press groups asked for private broadcaster Red Uno to be punished after airing hidden camera footage of a 13-year-old woman being raped by four men in the city of Santa Cruz, The Associated Press reports.

The situation remained unclear, however, after
local media later reported that the alleged victim was, in fact, 17, and that she had told authorities she was not raped, EFE says.

The broadcast caused outrage. "That is not how you do journalism. In the name of a scoop, of an exclusive [...] A life is worth more than a scoop," said the president of the Santa Cruz Press Federation, quoted by DPA. He called what occurred "outrageous, indecent and unethical."

The press union president and Santa Cruz’s ombudsman urged authorities to investigate the camera operator and reporter who were present and filmed the act without offering to help the unidentified victim.
