Reporter in Suriname threatened after reporting on cocaine missing from police
Caribbean media organizations have urged police to protect Ivan Cairo of De Ware Tijd one of Suriname’s two daily newspapers.
Cairo received a threatening phone call after reporting that more than 90 kilograms (198 pounds) of cocaine was missing from a police department vault, the Association of Caribbean Media Workers (ACM) reports (PDF). The ACM and the Surinamese Journalists Association have called for an investigation.
Cairo also reports for the Caribbean Media Corporation. He is a founding member and former president of the ACM.
