Argentine government guarantees employment to journalists of the bankrupt newspaper Crítica
Argentina's labor minister, Carlos Tomada, has promised to guarantee continued employment for journalists and other employees whose jobs were threatened with the closure of the newspaper Crítica, according to the blog of the newspaper workers. The are to be hired by other media, whether private or government-owned, the blog said.
Last week, the newspaper workers met with the labor minister, saying they had not been paid in four months, reported the TV channel Visión 7. According to Clarín, it is speculated that some journalists are being transferred to the Olmos group, close to the Argentine government and owner of several media, including the newspaper Crónica. The official state news agency Télam could be another possible destination.
Since the newspaper stopped circulating on April 29, its 190 employees have done everything -- including occupying the newsroom for 24 hours a day -- to try to keep their jobs. With the announcement from the labor minister, the employees cancelled a series of protests they had scheduled, reported Minutouno.
