Brazilian journalist detained after covering police killing

Marina Silva, photojournalist for the Brazilian newspaper Correio, was arrested Friday, Aug. 11 while covering the killing of a military police sergeant in Salvador de Bahía, the newspaper reported.

The military police claimed that Silva challenged the police officers. Silvia and other witnesses, however, denied the allegation, according to the news site Notícia Capital. The Bahian Journalists Syndicate accused the police of brutality, claiming in a statement that police broke Silva's arm, pushed her against a vehicle and tried to break her camera.

The state's Secretary of Public Security said the case is under investigation and promised to determine if the police used excessive force in the journalist's arrest, said Política Livre.
