The newspaper Jornal do Brasil, published for 119 years in Rio de Janeiro, is conducting research among its readers to decide whether to do away with the print version and offer only a digital edition. The newspaper published a half-page announcement on June 30 inviting its readers to respond.

According to iG columnist Guilherme Barros, the research results should be available in August, but that it is likely the newspaper will be the first in the country to move to publish online only.

Stopping the print circulation would be an attempt to control the company's financial problems, explained O Estado de S. Paulo, adding that the newspaper has about R$800 million (Brazilian currency) in debt.
