The hacking activist group Anonymous attacked several Mexican government websites during the country's independence day celebrations on Sept. 15. The Secretary of Public Security confirmed that the sites' servers were overloaded, reported the Spanish newspaper El Mundo.

Anonymous released a video stating that the Mexican people live in constant terror from organized crime and accused the government of ignoring the public outcry to stop the violence.

The websites of the Nayarit Congress, the Defense Ministry, and the municipal websites of San Luis Potosí were disabled the morning of Sept. 15, reported CNN México.

Humor columnist Jairo Calixto Albarrán criticized the cyber-attacks, writing that they happened while Mexicans rested and enjoyed their holiday and that the attacks did not target state websites from Veracruz, where two people were arrested for tweeting false rumors on Twitter.
