Harvard's Nieman Lab unveils online encyclopedia of the future of news
Harvard's Nieman Journalism Lab on Wednesday, May 18, launched Encyclo, an online encyclopedia focused on the future of news, according to the Nieman Lab.
Currently the encyclopedia includes 184 entries on "online news sites, newspapers, magazines, broadcast networks, technology companies, and more." The idea is to provide background, context and news about the "the most important players and innovators" in the "evolution of journalism."
Each encyclopedia entry provides a narrative of the subject, links to more information about the subject, peers/allies/competitors, Nieman Journalism Lab stories about the subject, and other online news stories about the subject.
The encyclopedia includes entries on traditional news outlets like The New York Times, non-profits like the Center for Public Integrity, blogs like Mashable, and tech companies like Facebook.
The Nieman Lab also wants the public's input on entries to add or ways to make the encyclopedia better.
This project takes after Columbia University's News Frontier Database, a "searchable, living, and ongoing documentation of digital news outlets across the country."
