Honduran journalist escapes shooting attempt unharmed

Luis Galdámez, a reporter for Radio Globo and TV Globo, was attacked by three shooters in front of his house in the capital city of Tegucigalpa, La Tribuna reports. The journalist used his own gun to fight off the attackers.

Galdámez has a morning radio show, where he often criticizes the 2009 coup that ousted President Manuel Zelaya, Revistazo reports. He was also one of the journalists who was holed up in the Brazilian embassy with the deposed president.

This is the second attack against Galdámez, who suffered a similar incident in 2006 that led the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights to formally recommend the journalist receive government protection, El Tiempo explains. The reporter criticized the slow police response to the most recent attack. “We journalists in Honduras are in the claws of crime, organized crime, and here there isn’t justice or safety for anyone,” he said.

No protection from the police, what a story, the real life of journalists, and here i thought the Caribbean was bad enough.
