Journalist sentenced to three years in prison for libeling Peruvian prosecutor

Journalist Paul Garay Ramírez, a correspondent for La Exitosa radio and the host of “Controversy” on Visión 47 TV, was sentenced to three years in prison for accusing prosecutor Agustín López of corruption, La República reports.

According to Generaccion, the evidence used in the trial is a recording from a local radio station that is attributed to the reporter. However, Garay denied that it is his voice and said he was working for a different station at the time.

The Press and Society Institute (IPYS) said it would send a team to investigate the case and alleged irregularities in the trial.

Garay is best known for reporting that former mayor Luis Valdez had ordered the April 2004 killing of journalist Alberto Rivera.
