Nicaraguan journalists threatened after reporting on government corruption
The Nicaraguan newspaper El Nuevo Diario reported that its journalists were threatened after publishing articles about supposed corruption in the government of President Daniel Ortega, according to the local press. The cases of corruption and nepotism are related to the Finance Ministry and the equivalent of the IRS, the newspaper said.
In recent weeks the newspaper has received a series of phone calls and emails. journalist Luis Galeano, who was in charge of the articles, has been a particular target.
El Nuevo Diario said the threats would not "silence" the newspaper "nor Galeano nor any other journalist."
Human rights and journalist organizations, along with other media outlets, condemned the threats against the newspaper, according to La Prensa, emphasizing that "without press freedom there is no freedom."
Complaints that the Sandinista government has persecuted its critics have become more frequent recently. Last September La Prensa denounced political persecution after the newspaper fired delivery workers.

Negative articles about Daniel Ortega and the Sandinistas.
We know that Daniel Ortega is approach 50 percent in the polls and rising. The Sandinista Party close behind, We know according to polls that an even higher number says that health.nutrition and education have improved in Nicaragua since Ortega gained power again in 2007, Most think the 16 years of U.S backed right wing governments from 90-2006 were terrible for the country and the nations poor especially are enthusiastically behind Ortega. We know that Infant Mortality, Child malnutrition and adult illiteracy are all declining in Nicaragua and the country is even going to be designated fully literate after inheriting a 30 percent illiteracy rate from previous leaders. Yet all I get from the media here in the states are negative articles about Daniel Ortega. Much of the same misinformation about him as we got in the 80s, Before wining about Ortega or Sandinistas threatening your press freedom, do me a favor and become a little more objective and balanced cause all your giving us are negative articles about Daniel Ortega and no positive one, which shows in conjunction with the facts already given. that your not giving us the full story and are failing to do your job correctly.I don't think you should have freedom of press if your articles are misleading us to believe Ortega is going to lose to a party polling in single digits while he is soaring.Travis
Sad
It is terrible how many governments are so corrupt. I work with someone who used to be affiliated with the government in Honduras, and he has filled me in with some horrifying stories.
