JOURNALISM IN THE AMERICAS Blog

Using blog networks to make money with journalism

Two media companies are hoping to create networks of local bloggers in an effort to turn online journalism into a profitable venture, according to Mathew Ingram of the technology blog GigaOM.

The Journal Register Co., which owns newspapers in Philadelphia, Michigan, Connecticut and New Jersey, and local news website TBD.com, run by the Washington Post's former online news editor Jim Brady, are partnering with GrowthSpur to help them build local blog networks with training and ad sales.

Despite the success of some blog networks like BaristaNet, Ingram wrote, "it’s still not clear whether hyper-local blogging and journalism in general can generate enough revenue to make them viable as businesses in their own right."

Best WordPress Plugins

I just wanted to comment on the part where it said "it’s still not clear whether hyper-local blogging and journalism in general can generate enough revenue to make them viable as businesses in their own right."

I work with plenty of bloggers that make great incomes with their WordPress blog, but it really does take a focused understanding of online marketing to make it work.

You can't just be a great writer and make sales, you also have to become a great marketer with an excellent knowledge of opt-in offers, list building, and copywriting.

Thanks for the excellent post!

Make money online with syndication?

There is a demand for highly localized new services, but independently they will struggle to generate income simply due to the limited population of a distinct geographical region. Perhaps with the possibility for syndication, only then can geo bloggers hope to have a sustainable business model.

Blog Networks and AutoPilot Profits

I believe the internet has come a long way and it's now time for hyper-local blogging and journalism to make a splash.

Focus and attention with a number of savvy journalists is all it would take to make the venture profitable.

Even to the point where several people could make a great living from home making AutoPilot Home Profits.

It's just around the corner...

Forming A Blog Network

It's a great idea to form a blog network. This will help all parties to spread their word about their work and what's going in in the local area. Best of all is that all of them are from the same area namely journalism. Many other individuals, groups or organizations should also form such networks in order to get better known.

Local blogging

There is definitely a future in local blogging. I'm always interested in what's happening in my community and I'd rather get local news and information rather than the national sort. With local advertising and promotions there's no reason to believe that they can't make a success of it.

Blog Networks and Making Money

I think the blogs need to be very relevant to whatever it is you are writing about. Creating your own network is not really a difficult task either. You can even find plugins for wordpress that allow multiple authors to share the same blog or turn it into an article directory. Lots of possibilities for the aspiring journalists out there.
