Short Courses of the Knight Center for Journalism in the Americas Knight Center Concludes Mathematics Course for Journalists The Knight Center for Journalism in the Americas concluded its online course, Mathematics for Journalists, which ended Nov. 21, 2004. The Knight Center plans to offer the class again in the future. The course was taught by Argentine journalist Sandra Crucianelli, international prize-winning investigative reporter and specialist in precision journalism. It covered six topics: • Basic math operations • Obtaining data • Measures of central tendency • Measures of proportion • Interpolation of external data • Infographics The class included online video and text lectures. Students participated in discussions and performed all assignments, quizzes and exams online. Special guest José Luis Dader, professor of precision journalism at the Universidad Complutense de Madrid, conducted an online presentation and chat session during the course. All students who completed the course received a certificate from the Knight Center. The course was offered to Spanish-speaking journalists with less than five years experience and those who possessed basic knowledge of computers, the Internet and email. No knowledge of statistics was a requirement. This was the first course in Spanish offered by the Knight Center as part of its distance learning project. Previous courses have been taught in English and Portuguese. The Knight Center for Journalism in the Americas was created by Professor Rosental Calmon Alves at the University of Texas at Austin School of Journalism in August 2002 thanks to a generous donation from the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation. Its main objective is to help journalists in the hemisphere to develop self-sustaining training programs that will raise the ethical and professional levels of journalism in the Americas.
