The Knight Center for Journalism in the Americas began its online course, Mathematics for Journalists, on Aug. 29, 2005. The six-week course, which ended Oct. 14, was offered to Argentine journalists, in partnership with the Argentine Journalism Forum (FOPEA).

The course was taught by Argentine journalist Sandra Crucianelli, international prize-winning investigative reporter and specialist in precision journalism. It covered six topics:

_Basic math operations and their journalistic applications
_Obtaining and using data for journalistic purposes
_Measures of central tendency
_Measures of proportion
_Interpolation of external data
_Infographics: interpretations and applications

The class included online video and text lectures. Students participated in discussions and performed all assignments, quizzes and exams online. The class was self-paced, and participants chose the hours they worked. All students who completed the course received a certificate from the Knight Center.

For more information about this course, see this page in Spanish.

This was the third time the Knight Center has offered the course by Sandra Crucianelli. The earlier two courses targeted journalists from throughout Latin America and were highly praised by the students. The Knight Center also offers distance learning courses in Portuguese and English.

The Knight Center for Journalism in the Americas was created by Professor Rosental Calmon Alves at the University of Texas at Austin School of Journalism in August 2002 thanks to a generous donation from the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation. Its main objective is to help journalists in the hemisphere to develop self-sustaining training programs that will raise the ethical and professional levels of journalism in the Americas.
