The Knight Center for Journalism in the Americas concluded its fourth online course on Mathematics for Journalists. The six-week course, which began in August 2005, was conducted entirely online and included 21 students from several countries in Latin America.
The course was taught by Argentine journalist Sandra Crucianelli, international prize-winning investigative reporter and specialist in precision journalism. It covered six topics:
• Basic math operations
• Obtaining data
• Measures of central tendency
• Measures of proportion
• Interpolation of external data
• Infographics
The class included online video and text lectures. Students participated in discussions and performed all assignments, quizzes and exams online. All students who completed the course received a certificate from the Knight Center.
This is the one of the courses in Spanish offered by the Knight Center as part of its distance learning project, which also includes short courses for journalists in Portuguese and English.
The Knight Center for Journalism in the Americas was created by Professor Rosental Calmon Alves at the University of Texas at Austin School of Journalism in August 2002 thanks to a generous donation from the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation. Its main objective is to help journalists in the hemisphere to develop self-sustaining training programs that will raise the ethical and professional levels of journalism in the Americas.
