Hacking group under investigation for posting false tweets on NBC News' Twitter account
Hackers attacked NBC News' Twitter account on Friday, Sept. 9, claiming that an airplane had crashed at Ground Zero in New York, reported The New York Times. The attack came just days before the 10th anniversary of the Sept. 11 plane hijackings.
The FBI is investigating the bogus tweets, which were taken down just minutes after they were posted to the account, which has about 130,000 followers, according to NBC News.
NBC News issued an official apology, stating, "We are working with Twitter to correct the situation and sincerely apologize for the scare that could have been caused by such a reckless and irresponsible act."
A group calling itself "The Script Kiddies" -- an offshoot of the hacking group Anonymous -- has claimed responsibility, according to ComputerWeekly.com, which added that the group's goal seems to be to "embarrass news organizations."
In July, Think Magazine ran an interview with a member of the Script Kiddies after the group hacked a Fox News Twitter account with false reports that President Barack Obama had been assassinated.
According to the Associated Press, "What was once a small group of pranksters has become a potential national security threat, federal officials say."
The hacking of NBC News' Twitter account comes on the heels of a similar attack in Venezuela the first week of September, in which the group N33 hacked the Twitter and email accounts of journalists critical of President Hugo Chavez.
