ABOUT US

The Knight Center for Journalism at the University of Texas at Austin is a professional training and outreach program for journalists in Latin America and the Caribbean. Our training programs have benefited thousands of journalists and journalism professors throughout the Americas.

The Knight Center has also helped to create a new generation of independent journalist organizations. These organizations have created self-sustaining training programs to raise the ethical and professional levels of journalism, thereby contributing to the freedom of press and democracy in the hemisphere.

Letter from the Director,
Rosental C. Alves

aboutus_ros_photo.jpgThank you for visiting the trilingual website of the Knight Center for Journalism in the Americas, dedicated to journalists of Latin America and the Caribbean. Note that from any page, you can switch languages between English, Spanish and Portuguese.

Our staff, which includes a team of UT-Austin students, works hard to keep the site updated with Knight Center activities and the latest news about journalism in the Americas. The site contains a variety of resources for journalists, including many useful links and a searchable archive of journalism news from the Americas, published here since 2003.

You are cordially invited to apply to our online distance-learning courses. Our multimedia journalism-training program incorporates a unique Knight Center methodology. We offer courses online in Spanish, Portuguese, and English.

I encourage you to subscribe to our weekly email newsletter, which features journalism news headlines from throughout the region. In addition to the headlines, the newsletter will keep you abreast of the Center's activities.

We would be delighted to hear from you. Please send us your comments to knightcenter@austin.utexas.edu.

Enjoy our site, bookmark it as a favorite, and come back soon.

Sincerely,

History

The Knight Center was founded by Professor Rosental Alves, with a $2 million grant from the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation. In 2007, the Knight Foundation pledged an additional $1.6 million over five years to allow the Knight Center to refocus its work as a digital media center for Latin American and Caribbean journalism and to expand its efforts to serve as an incubator for new journalism organizations.

The Knight Center has helped journalists to create the Brazilian Association for Investigative Journalism (Abraji), Mexico’s Center for Journalism and Public Ethics (CEPET), the Argentine Journalism Forum, the Peruvian Provincial Journalists Network, the Paraguayan Journalism Forum (FOPEP), and the Newsroom Council (CdR) of Colombia.

We conduct all our training activities in partnership with independent journalist organizations that are either forming with our assistance, or already in existence but seeking to grow. Every Knight Center collaboration is designed to help these organizations to develop the track record, strategies, and technical assistance needed to become long-term, self-sustaining actors in their respective countries.

Activities

Our four main activities are:

• To help journalists create and/or strengthen organizations to elevate journalism standards and defend press freedom in the hemisphere.
• To organize seminars and workshops in person and on the Web to increase the skills of reporters, editors, and photojournalists.
• To maintain a trilingual Web site (in English, Portuguese, and Spanish) that monitors daily journalism news in the Americas and offers useful resources for journalists.
• To organize the Austin Forum on Journalism in the Americas—an annual conference and a permanent network of organizations dedicated to journalism training and press freedom in Latin America and the Caribbean.
