Public pressure leads Brazilian paper to rehire journalist

In a small-scale mirror of a controversial firing, then rehiring in Mexico, the Brazilian newspaper A Tarde says it will rehire Aguirre Peixoto and annul the suspension it leveled against him, Portal Imprensa reports.

The journalist reported on alleged irregularities in the construction of a technology park in Bahia state, and critics suspect he was fired due to pressure from the real estate industry. After A Tarde employees went on strike, critics spoke out on social media, and groups like the Brazilian Press Association publicly denounced the move, the paper decided to rehire the journalist and revoke the suspension it had originally said it would level.

According to Bahia Toda Hora, A Tarde journalists have now ended their strike.

Also this week, public outcry led a Mexican radio station to rehire journalist Carmen Aristegui, who was initially fired due to alleged pressure from the government.
