Mexican journalists affected by covering violence now have online resource for mental health concerns


A new program from the Center for Journalism and Public Ethics (CEPET in Spanish) in Mexico aims to reduce the emotional and mental stress journalists covering organized crime and violence face in their jobs, announced the organization.

"Each time the phone rings in the newsroom, I would shake, thinking it was them again," a Mexican journalist told CEPET after receiving a threatening phone call. Read more »


Argentine journalist's car bombed as newspapers struggle with distribution strike

On Monday, Aug. 20, the Inter American Press Association (IAPA) declared the blockade on the circulation of newspapers in Argentina a "press freedom violation." “While the unions have a legitimate right to express themselves, their actions cannot limit the right to press freedom nor restrict people’s access to the information that the news media disseminate," IAPA said. Brazilian Newspaper Association issues special alert due to increasing violence against journalists

The killings of 12 Brazilian journalists between August 2010 and July 2012 prompted the National Association of Newspapers (ANJ in Portuguese) to announce a "special alert," reported the news agency EFE. A Brazilian TV Difusora news crew was attacked on the night of Saturday, Aug. 18, while covering the inauguration of a public square in the city of Bacabal, in Maranhão, according to the news site Imirante. Read more »


Argentine journalists suffer volley of attacks and threats throughout week

A slew of attacks and threats against journalists took place over the last week in Argentina. After being beaten, one journalist also received a death threat in the village of Sancti Spirtiu in the province of Santa Fe on Tuesday, Aug. 14, reported the Argentine Journalism Forum (FOPEA in Spanish). Mexican female journalists suffer from sexual, psychological violence, according to report


Mexican female journalists have been attacked 115 times in the last 10 years, with a noticeable increase after 2009, according to a new report by the association Women's Communication and Information (CIMAC in Spanish).
