RSF calls Mapuche journalist's detention in Chile political persecution

Chilean police detained a journalist for over three hours on Saturday, Nov. 24, on an old warrant, reported the website Diario Voz Populi. Pedro Cayuqueo, a Mapuche indigenous journalist, was detained by police in the community of Teodoro Schmidt because of a land invasion lawsuit from 1999, added the website. Read more »


Police arrest two journalists in Mexico allegedly linked to organized crime


Two reporters were arrested and accused of participating in organized crime in the central Mexican state of Aguascalientes. These cases are the most recent accusations against journalists of having connections to drug traffickers in the state over the last two years.

In total, four journalists have been accused of "organized crime with intent" in the state, reported the newspaper El Sol del Centro. Read more »


Venezuelan intelligence agency detains Argentine journalist accused of spying

Argentine journalist Jorge Lanata claimed he was detained by agents of the Bolivarian National Intelligence Service (SEBIN in Spanish) at the Caracas airport on Monday, Oct. 8, as he was about to board a flight home after covering Venezuela's presidential election on Sunday, Oct. 7, reported the International Freedom of Expression Exchange's website.
