Colombian police officer to be tried for manslaughter in the death of arrested reporter

The Internal Affairs Office of the Colombian police accused an officer of involuntary manslaughter for the death of journalist Guillermo Quiroz Delgado, reported the newspaper El Universal. The disciplinary hearing of officer Jorge David Pérez took place on Monday, Feb. 4, at the Sucre department police headquarters, the newspaper added.  Read more »


OAS announces investigation into the death of Brazilian journalist killed during the military dictatorship

The Inter-American Commission on Human Rights (IACHR), a branch of the Organization of American States, decided to investigate the circumstances surrounding the death of Brazilian journalist Vladimir Herzog in 1975, during the military dictatorship, reported the newspaper O Estado de São Paulo. Civil society organizations filed the request in 2009 and it was accepted by the IAHRC in November 2012. Herzog's family members announced the decision on Tuesday, Jan. 22. Read more »


Authorities investigate suspicious death of sports journalist at Argentine soccer club


Argentine police are investigating the death of a sports reporter whose body was found in the Racing Club soccer team's swimming pool, a place where a fan club called the Imperial Guard is known to meet, reported the newspaper La Nación. Read more »

Journalists unions in Bolivia reject new life insurance law

Journalists unions in Bolivia rejected the Life and Disability Insurance Law for Press Workers enacted by President Evo Morales on Monday, Dec. 10, reported the website Los Tiempos. The proposed insurance would be paid for with one percent of the monthly total gross revenue of public and private media organizations and managed by a board with majority State representation, added the website.  Read more »
