Radio host killed in Minas Gerais is 8th journalist killed in Brazil in 2015

Police are investigating the murder of radio host Luiz Manoel Souza, 48, who was killed on Dec. 7 in a rural area of Ubá after being shot by a group of men. The group, at least some of them driving in a truck, first confronted him as he was in his car. The men shot at his car and tires, forcing Souza to flee to a wooded area, which is when he was shot. Brazilian sentenced to 12 years in prison for 2013 murder of journalist

In Brazil, a country with a history of impunity concerning crimes against journalists, a man has been sentenced to 12 years in prison for the 2013 murder of journalist Rodrigo Neto, reporter for newspaper Vale do Aço, in Minas Gerais.

On June 19, Alessandro Neves Augusto received 12 years in prison for Neto’s death and four years for the attempted murder of a friend that was with Neto at the time, according to Hoje em Dia. Read more »


Brazilian blogger found decapitated in Minas Gerais

Brazilian authorities are investigating the murder of journalist Evany José Metzker whose body was found decapitated on the outskirts of the town of Padre Paraíso in the state of Minas Gerais on May 18, reported the newspaper O Globo. His body was found with bound hands, naked, and with signs of torture, and his head was found 100 meters from the rest of his body, the newspaper added. Read more »
