Press freedom violations increase in Brazil by 65% in 2016, says Abert report

Although the number of murders of Brazilian journalists has dropped to only two cases in 2016, violations against the press have manifested in other ways. The annual report from the Brazilian Association of Radio and Television Broadcasters (Abert) reported that, compared to 2015, last year saw a 65.5 percent increase in cases of violations to freedom of expression. In Dominican Republic, journalists are killed in radio booth during live broadcast

A radio announcer and the director of a radio station in the Dominican Republic were killed on the morning of Feb. 14 in the city of San Pedro de Macorís. According to EFE, an armed man entered the location and began firing several times. However, local media pointed out that there could have been two male attackers. Read more »

Reporters Without Borders wants to increase its presence in Latin America, invests in a regional office in Brazil

Reporters Without Borders (RSF for its acronym in French), a nonprofit organization that defends freedoms of expression and information, has been investing in Brazil to increase visibility and presence in the country. In 2015, RSF opened a regional office for Latin America in Rio de Janeiro and launched  a version of its site in Portuguese at the end of November 2016. Read more »


Radio reporter killed in Chihuahua, Mexico; main line of investigation is his work as a journalist

Radio reporter Jesus Adrián Rodríguez Samaniego, 41, was killed outside his home in Chihuahua, Mexico on the morning of Dec. 10.

According to La Silla Rota, the journalist was getting in his car to go to station Antena 102.5 FM to participate in his weekly slot as part of a commentator’s roundtable when two men in a car drove by and shot him multiple times. Read more »


Journalist killed in Peru during radio broadcast

Hernán Choquepata Ordoñez, Peruvian journalist from La Ribereña radio station, was broadcasting music for his program “Habla el pueblo” (“The town speaks”) when unidentified men entered the booth and gave him a beating that ended up taking his life on Nov. 20, reported newspaper La República.
