Course Objectives: 

A new generation of “hyperlocal” sites is filling the void left by the decline of news agencies and the crisis of the press. Hyperlocal journalism emerged mainly from citizens’ initiatives to provide information close to their immediate geographic surroundings. However, important media such as The New York Times have begun to push for hyperlocal spaces, and journalists have ventured into hyperlocal projects, adapting the basic rules of journalistic practice and creating new trends, in accordance to technological progress. Therefore, Crucianelli’s course, introduces reporters how to write for such hyperlocal media. They will learn to seek geo-localilzed data through advanced Web searches and specific search engines, on web sites and on social networks. The course objectives also include an introduction to hypertextual, multimedia narrative.

Course Requirements: 

• Ability to use basic formats for data processing: especially Word and Excel
• Mastery of medium-level skills in Internet searches
• Knowledge of basic digital tools for journalists
• Availability of 5–10 hours a week to dedicate to the course
• Ability to create and/or use a a Gmail and Yahoo email account

Course description: 

• Week 1: Introduction to hyperlocal journalism
• Week 2: Digital tools for hyperlocal journalism
• Week 3: Construction of news in a digital, hyperlocal medium
• Week 4: Entrepreneurial journalism and financing models

The classes are conducted entirely online. The course is divided into weekly modules that contain audiovisual presentations, documents, and online resources. As part of the course, students perform weekly exercises and to take part in online forums and additional assignments. Students work at their own pace but are expected to submit weekly assignments. Those who complete the course will receive a certificate of participation from the Knight Center.

Instructor Information: 

Sandra Crucianelli is an Argentine journalist who has won national and international awards for her reporting and instruction. She is also a specialist in precision journalism. Crucianelli has taught her popular online courses for the Knight Center since 2004 as part of the Center's Distance Education program.
