Course Objectives: 

• Train reporters to manage numeric variables within the context of a news story and to sharpen their accuracy and investigative journalism skills.
• Raise awareness among journalists of the importance of mathematics as a work tool that will allow a more professional analysis of numerical information through observation, reading documents, and use of databases.
• Instruct reporters to be responsible for obtaining their own numerical data and to lessen their dependance on verbal sources.
• Teach reporters to connect and cross-reference numerical data for the purpose of finding breaking news or creating a story.

Course Requirements: 

• Basic knowledge of: Excel, Office, WinZip, Adobe Acrobat and Internet browsers (Firefox, Exporer, Safari, etc.)
• Access to a computer with Internet and a broadband connection
• Daily use of Internet and digital tools for work tasks
• Ability to read English at medium level
• Possession of an avatar in Second Life; medium to high level of knowledge of Second Life
• Ability to use voice chat in Second Life with other students during planned trainings
• Ability to dedicate 10-15 hours a week to the course
• Possession of, or ability to create a Gmail and Yahoo email account

Course description: 

Week 1: Introduction to Mathematics for Journalists: Basic Operations
Week 2: Data Collection and Measures of Central Tendency
Week 3: Measures of Proportion and Comparison of Numerical Variables
Week 4: Web Resources for Numerical Data Interpolation
Week 5: Digital Visualization of Numerical Data

The course is conducted completely online through weekly modules containing audiovisual presentations, documents and useful online resources. It features weekly exercises, online discussion forums and additional assignments as part of the course. Students can work at their own pace however, they are expected to meet weekly deadlines for assignments. Those who successfully complete the course will receive a certificate of participation from the Knight Center.

Sandra Crucianelli has received national and international recognition for her reporting and teaching and is a specialist in precision journalism. She has offered her popular online courses since 2004 as part of the Knight Center's distance education program.
