Panel on Caribbean migration opens 2nd day of Austin Forum

Day two of the 9th Austin Forum on Journalism in the Americas started Saturday morning with a panel on Caribbean migration. Wesley Gibbins of the Association of Caribbean Media Workers; Colette Lespinasse, a Haitian radio host; Gotson Pierre of Alterpresse in Haiti; and María Isabel Soldevila of Listín Diario and the Pontífica Universidad Católica Madre y Maestra in the Dominican Republic, discussed the topic and its coverage in the media.

Keynote speaker Sandy Close of New America Media speaks at 10:30 a.m. on "The Voice of Migrants in the United States." From 11:15am-12:30 p.m., Luis Botello of the International Center for Journalists will moderate a panel discussion on the "Immigration environment in the United States: From reform to the wave of deportations."

The Forum begins again at 1:30 p.m. with working group sessions until 3:00 p.m. when participants will share the results of their conversations. Jose Luis Sierra of New America Media will present the rapporteur's highlights.

The Austin Forum, organized by the Knight Center for Journalism in the Americas and the Latin American and Media programs of the Open Society Foundations, continues Friday and Saturday with more discussion -- by invitation only -- about the ways media are covering migration. The complete program is available here.
