Brazilian filmmaker João Moreira Salles joins Knight Center for documentary screening and Q&A

Brazilian documentary filmmaker João Moreira Salles will join the Knight Center for Journalism in the Americas for a screening of his latest project, “No Intenso Agora" (In The Intense Now), followed by a Q&A moderated by RTF professor and documentary filmmaker Paul Stekler.

This event is free, but seats are limited and a ticket is required. Get your ticket here.

The documentary looks at social crises and uprisings of the 1960s in China, France, Czechoslovakia and Brazil, focusing on the people who participated. Salles considers the “relationship between a document and its political context,” focusing on images (amateur footage and archive material) captured during these moments of upheaval. The documentary has been selected to show at various film festivals, including the Viennale and Buenos Aires Festival Internacional de Cine Independiente, and was chosen as a Panorama Selection for the Berlinale.

In addition to his work as a documentary filmmaker, Salles is founder of long-form journalism and culture magazine Piauí and president of the Instituto Moreira Salles, a center for photography, music, literature, iconography and cinema. He has directed various documentary films that have garnered great recognition and awards at festivals like the Miami International Film Festival, the Cinéma du Réel, Havana Film Festival and others. Salles has also directed documentaries for television and lectured on documentary film at the Pontifical Catholic University of Rio de Janeiro.

The screening and Q&A are part of the Knight Center Speaker Series from the Knight Center for Journalism in the Americas in the Moody College of Communication at the University of Texas at Austin.
