Knight Center’s innovative MOOC program offers 7 courses, reaches 27,000 students in its first year

It’s been a little over a year since the Knight Center for Journalism in the Americas launched its innovative Massive Open Online Course (or MOOC) initiative and, in that time, the program has offered a total of seven massive courses and reached 27,674 people in more than 150 countries. Knight Center’s Distance Learning program offers 120 online courses in ten years

Two online learning programs offered by the Knight Center for Journalism in the Americas concluded successfully last week. Journalists from 18 countries in Latin America learned how to use digital tools to improve their work in a course in Spanish, and 44 Brazilian reporters and editors participated in a course in Portuguese on data journalism. Knight Center’s MOOC on entrepreneurial journalism takes off with Google’s support and almost 5,000 students

The Knight Center for Journalism in the Americas’ most recent Massive Open Online Course (MOOC), "Development of Journalistic Projects for the Web: an Introduction to Entrepreneurial Journalism," began on Monday, Nov. 18 with almost 5,000 students from 45 countries, and the class is still growing. The four-week course in Spanish, which is being offered with the support of Google, has become one of the Knight Center’s most popular MOOCs and attracted the largest number of Latin American students of any other class. 5 tips on how to teach a successful MOOC in journalism based on the Knight Center’s "Data-Driven Journalism"

For Amy Schmitz Weiss, a journalism professor at San Diego State University and one of the five instructors of the Knight Center for Journalism in the Americas’ MOOC “Data-Driven Journalism: The Basics,” teaching and coordinating the pioneering course was in itself a learning experience that taught her some general principles on how to organize a successful MOOC.

Writing for PBS’ Media Shift, Schmitz Weiss summed up her advice on teaching massive courses, concluding that an effective MOOC requires plenty of planning, teamwork and clear and abundant communication with the participants. Read more »

Brazilian Association of Newspapers and Knight Center offer online training on data journalism

Journalists interested in Computer Assisted Reporting (CAR) and data journalism can now enroll in the online course in Portuguese “Introduction to Data Journalism," developed by the Professional Qualification Program of the National Association of Newspapers (ANJ) as part of their first international training partnership, established with the Knight Center for Journalism in the Americas.
