More than 250 Latinx college and university students from the United States registered for a free online course from the Knight Center to help them grow as digital storytellers.<\/p>\n

\u201cDigital storytelling for the next generation of Latinx journalists,\u201d<\/strong> a free online course offered in collaboration with Microsoft, ran from June 20 to July 17, 2022. It was taught by Amara Aguilar, a designer, visual journalist, reporter, social media engagement producer and consultant.<\/p>\n

It is now available as\u00a0a self-directed course<\/strong><\/a> and can be accessed anytime, from anywhere, on\u00a0JournalismCourses.org<\/strong><\/a>.\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n

\"Digital<\/a><\/p>\n

In the course, students learn about branding and explore identity, are taught how to use TikTok and social media to tell their own stories, discuss challenges facing Latinx students and journalists, and hear from professionals about their own careers and personal journeys.<\/p>\n

Guest speakers include Rolling Stones reporter\u00a0Tom\u00e1s Mier<\/a>, Vox audience engagement editor\u00a0Gabby Fernandez<\/a> and Microsoft\u2019s\u00a0Cynthia Reynaud<\/a>. Module 4 features interviews with\u00a0Astrid Kayembe<\/a> of Report for America, and\u00a0Eric Resendiz<\/a> of ABC7. There is also an interview with\u00a0Lorena Bouvedaire<\/a> from The Huffington Post and Erick Galindo of KPCC and LAist. And finally, there is a discussion on the future of journalism with\u00a0Fernando Hurtado<\/a> of NBC and\u00a0Ashley Alvarado<\/a> of KPCC and LAist.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe interviews were amazing! I felt inspired hearing about different journeys and experiences,\u201d one student said in the final course evaluation.<\/p>\n

Another student said their favorite part of the course was \u201clearning about Latinx journalists who've had similar challenging experiences about making it into a very competitive industry where Latinx representation is still missing.\u201d<\/p>\n

Others were inspired by the course materials on TikTok.<\/p>\n

\u201cI thought I used TikTok, but I didn't know I had so many elements for reporting.. They were good explanations, well supported.\u201d<\/p>\n

The self-directed version of the course,\u00a0which is now available<\/a>, is made up of four modules that include video classes, readings and optional resources. Unlike the MOOC, it does not include discussion forums or quizzes.<\/p>\n

She has Bachelors' degrees in Journalism and Plan II Honors (Liberal Arts) and a Master's degree in Latin American Studies, all from the University of Texas at Austin. She started her journalistic career at The Beaumont Enterprise in Southeast Texas where she last worked as a breaking news reporter.
