How explanatory journalism informs and engages audiences,<\/strong><\/a><strong>\u201d<\/strong> will run from Jan. 16 to Feb. 12, 2023.\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/journalismcourses.org\/course\/explain_this_explanatory_journalism\/\"><strong>Learn more<\/strong><\/a> about the course and access instructions on how to register!<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/journalismcourses.org\/course\/explain_this_explanatory_journalism\/\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-4564 size-large\" src=\"https:\/\/knightcenter.utexas.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/12\/EXPLAIN-THIS-MOOC-1024x386.png\" alt=\"Explanatory Journalism MOOC\" width=\"1024\" height=\"386\" srcset=\"https:\/\/knightcenter.utexas.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/12\/EXPLAIN-THIS-MOOC-1024x386.png 1024w, https:\/\/knightcenter.utexas.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/12\/EXPLAIN-THIS-MOOC-300x113.png 300w, https:\/\/knightcenter.utexas.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/12\/EXPLAIN-THIS-MOOC-768x289.png 768w, https:\/\/knightcenter.utexas.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/12\/EXPLAIN-THIS-MOOC-1536x579.png 1536w, https:\/\/knightcenter.utexas.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/12\/EXPLAIN-THIS-MOOC-2048x772.png 2048w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Students will learn how to spot subjects where readers can benefit from explanatory journalism, figure out how to add context and background to clarify the news, and create \u201cpersistent content\u201d to fight misinformation.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cExplanatory journalism is the practice of making complicated subjects clear for readers, providing background and context within news stories or in standalone articles, and of taking on enterprise projects that can make clear how something important works,\u201d said course instructor John O\u2019Neil.<\/p>\n<p>Each week of the course focuses on a particular module.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Module 1\u00a0<\/strong>looks at what content benefits from an explanatory approach and the tools at our disposal to help readers make sense of it.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Module 2\u00a0<\/strong>teaches how to spot holes in articles, and how to craft brief asides, as well as how to add bigger explanatory pieces into your articles.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Module 3<\/strong> covers sidebars and standalones, including creating explainers that can be reused later, and that can fight disinformation.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Module 4\u00a0<\/strong>looks at longform and enterprise explanatory pieces, including incorporating graphics and data. It will also discuss taking advantage of social media.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>O\u2019Neil<\/strong> is an editor with the QuickTake team at Bloomberg News in New York City. QuickTakes are readable, authoritative pages that provide readers with background and context on current events. O\u2019Neil previously worked for The New York Times for 24 years as an editor on the metro, Washington, special sections and news desks. He also led the development of the Times Topics pages into an online current events encyclopedia.<\/p>\n<p>O\u2019Neil will be joined by guest speakers, including\u00a0<strong>Margaret Sullivan<\/strong>, professor at Duke University and former media columnist at The Washington Post;\u00a0<strong>John Wihbey<\/strong>, professor at Northeastern University;\u00a0<strong>S. Mitra Kalita<\/strong>, co-founder of URL Media and Epicenter-NYC;\u00a0<strong>Juliana Barbassa<\/strong>, deputy books editor at The New York Times;\u00a0<strong>Kelsey Butler<\/strong>, equality reporter at Bloomberg News;\u00a0<strong>Lisa Beyer<\/strong>, QuickTake editor at Bloomberg News;\u00a0<strong>Mary Childs<\/strong>, co-host of NPR\u2019s Planet Money; and\u00a0<strong>Zach Mider<\/strong>, features writer at Bloomberg News and winner of the 2015 Pulitzer Prize for explanatory journalism.<\/p>\n<p>O\u2019Neil said he chose a mixture of people who have a good overview of the needs for explanatory journalism and how they fit into educating and informing readers, as well as combating disinformation. Other speakers will address some of the challenges with creating explanatory journalism.<\/p>\n<p>The course is open to reporters, editors, students, aspiring journalists, teachers, scientists, historians or other area specialists. All you need is an internet connection and a web browser.<\/p>\n<p>O\u2019Neil emphasized that the MOOC will benefit students who want to improve the level of explanation in their regular work, as well as those who are contemplating taking on longer explanatory projects. People working in adjacent fields, like podcasts or video, are also invited.<\/p>\n<p>Like all Knight Center courses, this MOOC is asynchronous, meaning the activities can be completed on the days and at the times that best suit your schedule. However, there are recommended weekly deadlines so students don\u2019t fall behind.<\/p>\n<p>O\u2019Neil will teach the course using videos, presentations, readings, discussion forums and quizzes.Those who successfully complete course requirements are eligible for a certificate of completion. She has Bachelors' degrees in Journalism and Plan II Honors (Liberal Arts) and a Master's degree in Latin American Studies, all from the University of Texas at Austin. She started her journalistic career at The Beaumont Enterprise in Southeast Texas where she last worked as a breaking news reporter. Es una periodista con inter\u00e9s en la libertad de prensa, la democratizaci\u00f3n y el periodismo investigativo en Am\u00e9rica Latina y est\u00e1 dedicada a crear mayor consciencia sobre la importancia de los medios noticiosos independientes para la salud de las democracias. Empez\u00f3 su carrera en periodismo en The Beaumont Enterprise al sureste de Texas, en donde recientemente trabaj\u00f3 como reportera de noticias de \u00faltima hora.
