How explanatory journalism informs and engages audiences\u201d<\/strong> is now available to be taken any time, from anywhere, and at your own pace.\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/journalismcourses.org\/course\/explain-this-sdc\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><u>Check it out today!<\/u><\/a><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">In the four modules of this program, students learn how to spot subjects where readers can benefit from explanatory journalism, figure out how to add context and background to clarify the news, and create \u201cpersistent content\u201d to fight misinformation.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">The course instructor is veteran New York City-based journalist\u00a0<strong>John O\u2019Neil<\/strong>, an editor with Bloomberg News who has developed new formats for explanatory news and is a member of the \u201cBloomberg QuickTake\u201d team. QuickTakes are readable, authoritative pages that provide readers with background and context on current events.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">The modules consist of video classes, presentation slides, transcripts, readings and optional resources.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Each week of the course focuses on a particular module.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Module 1<\/strong> looks at what content benefits from an explanatory approach and the tools at our disposal to help readers make sense of it.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Module 2<\/strong> teaches how to spot holes in articles, and how to craft brief asides, as well as how to add bigger explanatory pieces into your articles.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Module 3<\/strong> covers sidebars and standalones, including creating explainers that can be reused later, and that can fight disinformation.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Module 4<\/strong> looks at longform and enterprise explanatory pieces, including incorporating graphics and data. It will also discuss taking advantage of social media.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">O\u2019Neil is also joined by guest speakers, including:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>S. Mitra Kalita<\/strong>, co-founder of URL Media and Epicenter-NYC;<strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Juliana Barbassa<\/strong>, deputy books editor and former Latin America editor at The New York Times;<\/li>\n<li><strong>Kelsey Butler<\/strong>, equality reporter and former credits market reporter for Bloomberg News;<\/li>\n<li><strong>Lisa Beyer,<\/strong> QuickTake editor at Bloomberg News;<\/li>\n<li><strong>Mary Childs<\/strong>, co-host of NPR\u2019s Planet Money;<\/li>\n<li><strong>Kenneth Chang<\/strong>, science reporter at The New York Times;<\/li>\n<li><strong>Thomas Lin,<\/strong> editor-in-chief of Quanta magazine; and<strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Zach Mide<\/strong>r, features writer at Bloomberg News and winner of the 2015 Pulitzer Prize for explanatory journalism.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">\u201cExplain This\u201d was initially offered as a massive open online course (MOOC) and ran from Jan. 16 to Feb. 12, 2023. It attracted 3,284 students and was offered for free thanks to support from the Knight Foundation.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">\u201c\u2018Explain This\u2019 drew together a community of over 3,000 students from more than 150 countries, a group that included writers and editors in large newsrooms, freelancers, journalism professors and people writing for non-profits and even public relations firms,\u201d O\u2019Neil said. \u201cIn the online discussions this diverse group voiced a common belief -- that improving their ability to explain the things they're writing about (or making videos, podcasts or graphics about) is essential to serving readers, especially at a time of increased misinformation.\u201d<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Katerina Bakogianni, head of podcasts at Alter Ego Media, said she signed up for the course while developing the first daily news podcast in Greece, \u201ca daily explainer and an in-depth look on current issues or articles highlighted in print in the newspaper of our media group.\u201d<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">\u201cI found the course useful, to the point and passed all the information to the team working for the podcast,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">MOOCs offer interaction with instructors and attract thousands of students. Once a MOOC is over, the Knight Center repurposes them as self-directed courses that can be taken at any time, from anywhere in the world, and at the student\u2019s own pace. She has Bachelors' degrees in Journalism and Plan II Honors (Liberal Arts) and a Master's degree in Latin American Studies, all from the University of Texas at Austin. She started her journalistic career at The Beaumont Enterprise in Southeast Texas where she last worked as a breaking news reporter. Teresa Mioli es la gerente editorial del Centro Knight para el Periodismo en las Am\u00e9ricas. Es una periodista con inter\u00e9s en la libertad de prensa, la democratizaci\u00f3n y el periodismo investigativo en Am\u00e9rica Latina y est\u00e1 dedicada a crear mayor consciencia sobre la importancia de los medios noticiosos independientes para la salud de las democracias. El objetivo de su trabajo period\u00edstico es ayudar las personas para que tomen decisiones informadas sobre sus vidas y sus sociedades, y busca que otros periodistas tengan la posibilidad de hacer lo mismo. Teresa tiene una licenciatura en Periodismo y Artes liberales (Plan II Honors), y una maestr\u00eda en Estudios Latinoamericanos, todos de la Universidad de Texas en Austin. Empez\u00f3 su carrera en periodismo en The Beaumont Enterprise al sureste de Texas, en donde recientemente trabaj\u00f3 como reportera de noticias de \u00faltima hora.
