Learning to harness that power is the subject of two lunchtime workshops from Google News Initiative (GNI) to be offered at the 26th International Symposium on Online Journalism (ISOJ).<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Anyone already registered for ISOJ is welcome to attend these workshops, which are included with the price of an ISOJ ticket for in person or virtual participation. However,\u00a0<strong>workshop registration is required<\/strong>. Register now for \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/forms.gle\/zCAmfTMeTWMvkMJv6\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><u>Get Started with AI Tools for News<\/u><\/a>\u201d (March 27) and \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/forms.gle\/6QcEQBKh849MrkYR9\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><u>NotebookLM for Journalists and Pinpoint for Journalists<\/u><\/a>\u201d (March 28). Seats are limited and the sessions are in English, without interpretation to Spanish (which will be limited to the main ISOJ sessions).<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">On Thursday, March 27, Iain Christie, GNI trainer, will provide a birds-eye view of Google\u2019s mission and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/ai.google\/responsibility\/principles\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><u>AI principles<\/u><\/a>, including its tools to strengthen AI literacy and assist with researching, reporting and writing.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">\u201c[AI is] embedded in everything we do,\u201d Christie said. \u201cIt\u2019s making AI helpful for everyone.\u201d<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">During Thursday\u2019s workshop, Christie will walk participants through the basics of five Google tools: generative AI chatbot\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/nam12.safelinks.protection.outlook.com\/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fai.google%2Fget-started%2Fgemini-ecosystem%2F&amp;data=05%7C02%7C%7C452e0e1675dc49d7a47e08dd5767538b%7C31d7e2a5bdd8414e9e97bea998ebdfe1%7C0%7C0%7C638762823491513192%7CUnknown%7CTWFpbGZsb3d8eyJFbXB0eU1hcGkiOnRydWUsIlYiOiIwLjAuMDAwMCIsIlAiOiJXaW4zMiIsIkFOIjoiTWFpbCIsIldUIjoyfQ%3D%3D%7C0%7C%7C%7C&amp;sdata=wUL9BV8Rba6W2Ez9Io%2BrOB2tLzLu8O2OCk4jfijdiA4%3D&amp;reserved=0\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><u>Gemini<\/u><\/a>, verification search engine\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/toolbox.google.com\/factcheck\/explorer\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><u>Fact Check Explorer<\/u><\/a>, research tool\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/journaliststudio.google.com\/pinpoint\/about\/?utm_source=jsuite_portal\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><u>Pinpoint<\/u><\/a>, research and note taking tool\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/notebooklm.google\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><u>NotebookLM<\/u><\/a>and reporting assistant\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/newsinitiative.withgoogle.com\/resources\/stories\/nci\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><u>News Consumer Insights<\/u><\/a> (NCI).<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">His favorite is NCI, which he calls a \u201cone-stop shop\u201d to help small and medium-sized publishers who are currently doing it all. Relaunched in August 2024, NCI 3.0 gives a 360-view of a news organization\u2019s performance by connecting Google Analytics, Search Console, Ad Manager or AdSense accounts. NCI helps publishers with questions like how the audience and revenue are being developed, how articles are performing, and how the site is loading.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Christie stressed that not everyone needs to be a journalist to use these tools \u2013 they\u2019re also for team members in ad sales, video, reader and revenue retention and other areas of the news organization.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">\u201cThe role of the GNI program really is to support, sustain, offer consultancy services to allow journalism to thrive,\u201d Christie said.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">On Friday, March 28, Christie returns with another lunchtime workshop and a deeper dive into two Google tools: Pinpoint and NotebookLM.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">This session will be less introduction to AI and more demonstration of these specific tools that help journalists research and report, he said.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">With NotebookLM \u2013 \u201cyour personalized AI research assistant\u201d \u2013 journalists can upload sources and get AI summaries and insights into the material provided, including citations. Google says it\u2019s also multimodal and multilingual, allowing you to research across text, graphs, images and audio in various languages.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Meanwhile, Google says Pinpoint affords journalists and academics the ability to analyze large volumes of documents, assists with investigative reporting and breaking news analysis, helps with fact checking and collecting notes, and more.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">\u201cJournalists are using Pinpoint to search through thousands of documents, transcribe and search audio and video files, transform similarly structured documents into sortable spreadsheets, and use generative AI to get insights about their documents,\u201d Christie said.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Both workshops can stand on their own, Christie said, but ISOJ participants are welcome to register for both.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">\u201cGoogle has been an ISOJ partner for more than a decade.
