UPDATE: After 15 years, second ex-paramilitary fighter sentenced for crimes against Colombian journalist Jineth Bedoya

UPDATE (3/21/16): A former Colombian paramilitary fighter accused in the May 2000 kidnap, torture and rape of journalist Jineth Bedoya Lima has been sentenced to 28 years in prison.

Mario Jaimes Mejía, known as 'El Panadero,' accepted charges against him on Feb. 2. He was sentenced on March 18.

Colombian newspaper El Espectador marks 129 years with campaign for forgiveness

For El Espectador’s 129th anniversary and in anticipation of the signing of a long-anticipated peace accord between the government and the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia (FARC), the Colombian newspaper is asking readers whom they will forgive.

For the greater part of the last century, Colombians have lived with fighting and violence between state security forces, leftist guerrillas, drug cartels, criminal gangs and paramilitaries. Innocent people were often caught in the middle of these conflicts or were direct targets. Read more »


IWMF fellows head to Colombia and Mexico-U.S. border as part of Adelante initiative

The first group of fellows for the Adelante initiative from the International Women’s Media Foundation (IWMF) have been selected and are preparing for trips to Colombia and the Mexico-U.S. border.

As part of the two-week long trips, six journalists will go to the Mexico-U.S. border to report on economic development and the human impact of migration. Another group of six journalists will cover rural and economic development in Colombia.

Colombian journalists launch investigation to fight for justice for murdered colleague

Flor Alba Núñez Vargas was only 25-years-old when she was fatally shot on the way to work on Sept. 10, 2015. Despite her youth, she simultaneously worked as a journalist at radio stations, television outlets and newspapers in Pitalito in the Huila department of southwest Colombia. Read more »
