In a journalism landscape increasingly shaped by data, newsroom leaders need more than technical support. They need an editorial mindset that allows them to oversee data-informed reporting and make confident decisions. And many want practical strategies for evaluating story ideas, guiding reporters with datasets and editing data-driven work effectively and efficiently.
To help strengthen these skills, the Knight Center is offering "Data Mindset for Editors," a new free online course running from Feb. 9 to March 8, 2026.
Designed for editors, producers and newsroom leaders who want to embrace data as part of their editorial workflows, "Data Mindset for Editors" will guide participants through the full lifecycle of a data-driven story, from developing story ideas and sourcing data to shaping the final story for publication. This course is free and open to anyone interested in building their data skills; no prior experience is required.
The course is led by MaryJo Webster, a veteran data journalist with more than 25 years of experience who currently heads the data team at the Minnesota Star Tribune, where she has built up a small data team that includes a data reporter and a news developer. Webster's team often partners with reporters and editors across all departments, helping shape strategies that support storytelling and editorial decision-making.
Participants will also hear from guest speakers who are leaders in data journalism and newsroom innovation, including Helena Bengtsson, data journalism editor at Gota Media and Bonnier News Local in Sweden; Natalia Louzau, data journalist at La Nación Data in Argentina; Chase Davis, founder of Local Angle and former Minnesota Star Tribune executive; and C.J. Sinner, director of graphics and data visuals at the Minnesota Star Tribune.
"Data Mindset for Editors" is organized into five modules that build on each other to strengthen editorial data skills:
Introduction Module: Explore the value of a data mindset for editors and newsroom leaders, watch a Q&A session with instructor MaryJo Webster and Swedish data journalist Helena Bengtsson.
Module 1 – Developing a data mindset: Build a foundational understanding of data concepts, learn how to evaluate story ideas with data potential and recognize when data can enhance a story.
Module 2 – Finding and vetting data: Learn practical approaches for assessing data sources and supporting reporters in sourcing or constructing reliable datasets.

The course is asynchronous, allowing participants to complete activities at their own pace each week through video classes, reading materials and discussion forums. Participants will also have the option to join a live Q&A session with instructor MaryJo Webster or watch the recording at any time. A certificate of completion will be available for those who complete all course requirements.
