This English-language course will be led by a highly qualified team of instructors:

• Jaisal Noor, Democracy Initiative manager at The Solutions Journalism Network, leads the Advancing Democracy Fellowship, assisting newsrooms in improving political coverage. He’s reported for outlets like Democracy Now! and The Atlantic and supports US Democracy Day for pro-democracy journalism.
• Jennifer Brandel, Co-founder & CEO of Hearken, is an award-winning journalist who founded and led the ground-breaking audience-first journalism series Curious City at WBEZ Chicago.
• Lynn Walsh, Emmy Award-winning journalist with over 15 years of experience in investigative, data, and TV journalism, she now works as a freelancer and serves as Assistant Director at Trusting News, rebuilding trust in journalism.
• Julia Hotz, Solutions Journalism Network’s Fellowships Manager, created and leads SJN’s LEDE Fellowship and Complicating the Narratives (CTN) Fellowship and now reports for “The Connection Cure.”

"Participants will gain expertise in how to report with and for, not just about, their communities; prove out practices that heighten civic knowledge and participation; and build trust with audiences, especially communities that have long been marginalized and stigmatized,” Noor said.

During the four-week course, participants will rethink election reporting, moving beyond political drama to focus on community issues. They’ll learn to engage with transparency and accountability, building trust with audiences. By prioritizing solutions-oriented reporting, journalists will inspire positive change and strengthen democracy.

“Political coverage that puts the public first can build trust, reduce polarization and help our communities solve problems,” Noor said. “In other words, it can help democracy work better.”

Through a combination of video lectures, readings, discussions, and quizzes, participants can engage with the course materials at their own pace, completing activities and participating in discussions as their schedules allow. Whether you are a journalist, editor, student, or aspiring reporter from anywhere around the world, this course offers valuable insights into transforming election reporting.

Although this course is asynchronous, meaning there is no mandatory live instruction, interactive learning is still encouraged via discussion forums and live office hours that will be offered with the instructors to ensure that participants receive personalized support and guidance throughout the course. These sessions will be recorded for those who are unable to attend so they can access them later.

The course will be organized into four modules:

• Module 1: Led by Lynn Walsh, this module focuses on fostering transparency and openness in newsrooms while teaching participants how to craft mission statements and share coverage goals effectively.
• Module 2: Instructed by Jennifer Brandel, this module explores strategies for community-driven journalism and advocates for better engagement with diverse audiences.
• Module 3: The third module, guided by Jaisal Noor, introduces solutions journalism as a tool for enhancing campaign coverage, including integration into existing beats and real-world examples from newsrooms.
• Module 4: Co-instructed by Lynn Walsh and Julia Hotz, the final module addresses polarization in election reporting and offers practical techniques to avoid amplifying extreme views while promoting fairness and credibility in reporting.

The instructors will be joined by several special guest speakers, including:

• Natalia Contreras, from Vote Beat/Texas Tribune, who has covered a range of topics as a community journalist including local government, public safety, immigration, and social issues
• Christiaan Mader, founder and executive director of The Current, Lafayette, Louisiana
• Chris Green, executive editor of The Journal, the Kansas Leadership Center’s quarterly magazine.
• Alexis Allison, author at Fort. Worth Report, specializes in health reporting
• Amanda Ripley, New York Times bestselling author and co-founder of Good Conflict
