Article 19 Brazil calls for government response after third blogger killed in Maranhão in six months

After the killing of a blogger in Maranhão, freedom of expression nonprofit organization Article 19 Brazil has called on federal and state authorities to respond to violence against journalists in that state.

Manoel Messias Pereira, also known as Manoel Benhur, was killed on April 9 in the northeastern Brazil state of Maranhão, in the town of Grajaú. Read more »


Blogger killed in northeastern Brazil; second journalist murdered in country in less than a week

Two people on a motorcycle fatally shot 30-year-old Brazilian blogger Ítalo Eduardo Diniz Barros on Nov. 13 in Governador Nunes Freire in Maranhão state. A friend with Diniz was also shot, but survived, according to G1.

Military police confirmed that Diniz had received threats for publications made to his blog, G1 reported. Read more »


Brazilian blogger found decapitated in Minas Gerais

Brazilian authorities are investigating the murder of journalist Evany José Metzker whose body was found decapitated on the outskirts of the town of Padre Paraíso in the state of Minas Gerais on May 18, reported the newspaper O Globo. His body was found with bound hands, naked, and with signs of torture, and his head was found 100 meters from the rest of his body, the newspaper added. Read more »

Brazilian blogger sentenced to jail for writing fictional short story

José Cristian Góes, a reporter from the Brazilian state of Sergipe, was sentenced on July 4 to seven months and a week in jail for writing and posting a fictional short story on local political cronyism in May 2012 for his blog Infonet, reported the daily Conjur.

The sentence, however, was converted into community service. Góes must serve one hour each day for the period of the sentence. Read more »

Cuban blogger Yoani Sánchez was released on Friday Oct. 5, after being detained for 30 hours, according to the Los Angeles Times and the blogger on her Twitter account. Read more »
