Another journalist from Veracruz, Mexico has been killed, this time while under state protection.

On July 21, police reporter Pedro Tamayo Rosas was shot multiple times in front of his wife and children outside his house in Tierra Blanca. He died on the way to the hospital. Read more »

More journalists killed in Honduras; RSF calls it "the country of impunity"

Impunity in the murders of journalists has always been a problem in most Latin American countries.

The first steps, finding those responsible and determining motives, is especially challenging in Honduras, a country with the highest murder rate in the world where, according to Paris-based organization Reporters Without Borders (RSF by its initials in French), “impunity is the rule.”

In the past two weeks, several journalists from the Central American country have been killed and there are no clear explanations as to who killed them or why. Read more »

Three Mexican journalists in the states of Oaxaca, Veracruz and Guanajuato have been killed in the span of a week.

Brazilian sentenced to 12 years in prison for 2013 murder of journalist

In Brazil, a country with a history of impunity concerning crimes against journalists, a man has been sentenced to 12 years in prison for the 2013 murder of journalist Rodrigo Neto, reporter for newspaper Vale do Aço, in Minas Gerais.

On June 19, Alessandro Neves Augusto received 12 years in prison for Neto’s death and four years for the attempted murder of a friend that was with Neto at the time, according to Hoje em Dia. Read more »


Three Latin American countries among deadliest for journalists in 2014

Paraguay, Brazil and Mexico placed in the top 20 deadliest countries for journalists in 2014, according to a special year-end report by the Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ).

The database numbers provided by CPJ tally the deaths of journalists in which the motive for the killing was directly work-related.   Read more »
