Brazilian police alerted a Paraguayan journalist of a plot to kill him, reported the newspaper Última Hora. The plot to kill Cándido Figueredo, correspondent for ABC Color in Pedro Juan Caballero, Paraguay, was discovered by Brazilian authorities after intercepting a telephone call. Read more »

Award-winning news site specializing in drug coverage in Mexico suffers cyber attack

A Nov. 25 cyber attack forced the weekly Mexican news site Ríodoce offline, according to the Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ). Ríodoce is one of the few publications that covers drug trafficking and organized crime in the northwestern city of Culiacán. Read more »

Journalist and her ex-boyfriend shot to death in Brazil

A journalist and her ex-boyfriend were shot to death at a gas station in the Brazilian coastal city of Vila Velha, in Espírito Santo, the morning of Saturday, Nov. 19, according to Folha Vitória.

Journalist Marisa Curtolo Cavalcanti, 52, was shot in the stomach and her ex-boyfriend, Gustavo Luiz Sodré Machado, 36, was shot in the neck. Read more »

Brazilian cameraman caught in the crossfire while covering police operation outside Rio de Janeiro

Cameraman for TV Bandeirantes Gelson Domingos died in a firefight between police and drug traffickers on Nov. 6 in the Antares favela in Santa Cruz, west of Rio de Janeiro, reported G1. Domingos was covering the police operation in the community when he was shot with a rifle. Read more »
